Sneak preview: the making of Marenthe’s world
When I was 26, I worked as an emerging art director in Brussels for magazines such as Marie Claire and Elle Decoration.
My thirsty lioness heart was constantly looking for adventure, inspiration and unconventional beauty. My determination was greater than the Eiffel Tower. I wanted to understand where the whimsical fantasy images that have been fluttering around in my head since what feels like time immemorial, came from and how I could transform them into art.
After work, I ducked into the archives, which were packed with arty books and vintage glossies like Vogue and Avenue. Like a sponge, I soaked up all inspiration. At this point, I discovered that my wild imagination wasn’t weird —pink cats, flying whales, and surreal plants with lion tails are perfectly normal in my surreal fairyland— but a gift that may be cherished and shared without embarrassment.
A month ago I took a leap.
I decided that the time was right for a photo shoot. I wanted to bring my fairytale world to life. I asked two brilliant photographer friends, an amazing make-up artist, an organizer and a fashion designer with a flamboyant wardrobe if they wanted to participate.
They all said yes.
It was a celebration of unapologetic individuality and haphazardness. A day when my lioness heart could nestle safely in her fantasy world and bathe in eclectic harmony. We painted with seawater and created the extraordinary via playfulness. Dredged-up thoughts settled into place, and the clouds stuck everything together as one harmonious whole.
Together, we found the key to a magical hidden world and that is what we artists are capable of.
We create magic.
You don’t have to be a genius or a professional artist to do that. With every line you draw, you influence your own life and the lives of the people around you. Don’t be afraid to descend the stairs to where your cherished garden is hidden. It’s crucial to open the little gates, behind which your wildest secret dreams are kept; let them escape and play. They may feel comfortable in our private domains, but otherwise we just let them gather dust and in the end that creates nothing. Not in your life and not in the lives of others.
Write, draw, and paint.
There lies the golden key that opens the gate to creative freedom, to the place where you can be whoever you want to be. Do anything that helps your creative mind to vent. Clinging to limitations sours your soil and withers the foliage of your creative capacity.
If you are able to touch your own heart, you will touch the hearts of the people that surround you.
